When to go: the short answer
The museums are open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00, with last entry at 18:00. The halls are cleared 30 minutes before closing. Sundays are closed, except the last Sunday of the month. The first hour after opening is the usual starting point for a calmer visit.
Nobody can promise a quiet day. No weekday is proven to be the emptiest, and queue lengths change from week to week. What you can control is the season, the day of the week and, above all, how much time you have left when you go in.

Rome's climate by month
Long-term averages for Rome from 1971 to 2000. They show the pattern of the year, not the weather on your day.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 11.9 °C | 3.1 °C | 66.9 mm |
| February | 13.0 °C | 3.5 °C | 73.3 mm |
| March | 15.2 °C | 5.2 °C | 57.8 mm |
| April | 17.7 °C | 7.5 °C | 80.5 mm |
| May | 22.8 °C | 11.6 °C | 52.8 mm |
| June | 26.9 °C | 15.3 °C | 34.0 mm |
| July | 30.3 °C | 18.0 °C | 19.2 mm |
| August | 30.6 °C | 18.3 °C | 36.8 mm |
| September | 26.5 °C | 15.2 °C | 73.3 mm |
| October | 21.4 °C | 11.3 °C | 113.3 mm |
| November | 15.9 °C | 6.9 °C | 115.4 mm |
| December | 12.6 °C | 4.2 °C | 81.0 mm |
July and August are the hottest months. October and November bring the most rain. The milder in-between months, April to June and September, are the comfortable choice for the walk and the line outside. This is a statement about weather, not about crowds: the figures say nothing about which month has the fewest visitors.

Using your time well
Practical choices that matter more than the exact day.
Go in early, not late
A late entry shortens the time you have inside. With last entry at 18:00 and the halls cleared from 19:30, you have at most one and a half hours. Starting at opening gives you the whole day. The early entry page explains what an early start means.
Weekdays and Saturdays are your normal choice
The regular schedule is the same from Monday to Saturday, so Friday and Saturday also close at 20:00. Check the calendar for special evening openings before you plan around one.
The free Sunday is a trade-off
The last Sunday of the month is free, with hours of 09:00 to 14:00. It saves the ticket price, but it gives you fewer hours. See the free Sunday page for the 2026 dates.
Plan for heat and rain
Summer highs reach about 30 °C, and you wait outside before the checks. Bring water and a hat for the line, but note that hats are not allowed inside. In wet months an umbrella is useful, though larger umbrellas must be handed in.
Dress for the rules, not the forecast
Shoulders covered and no shorts above the knee, whatever the temperature. The dress code applies in July as in January.
