Vatican Museums Tours Compared

A guided visit adds a guide and explanation to the same museum route. Here is how the main kinds of Vatican Museums tour differ and what to check before you book one.

Choosing a Vatican Museums tour

The museums are large, and the route runs through long galleries to the Sistine Chapel. A tour adds a guide, a plan for the day and often a meeting point close to the entrance. The entry ticket is part of the tour, or you buy it separately, so look at the listing before you compare prices.

The museums themselves sort their visits into groups: the museum visit, the Vatican Gardens, the Papal Palace and Secret Garden at Castel Gandolfo, and the necropolis on Via Triumphalis. These are separate bookings. Do not assume that a museum tour includes any of the others.

Group rules and what they mean for you

The museum sets rules for guided groups.

A guided group of 11 people or more has to use the radio receiver system that the museums rent out, and guides may not use amplified microphones. This means that you hear your guide through a headset, which makes a large group easier to follow in a crowded gallery.

A group tour does not remove the security check. Metal detectors apply to everyone, and a tour that is booked online has no exemption. Bags that are too large and items such as knives, scissors and large umbrellas must be left in the cloakroom, which is free. Read the dress code before you meet your group.

Early entry, breakfast and special access

Words in a listing that need a closer look.

Early entry

The regular opening is 08:00, so an 08:00 slot is a normal entry. Check whether a listing really starts before the general public, and read the early entry page.

Breakfast in the Pigna Court

From April to October, a breakfast buffet in the Pigna Court can be combined with a guided visit and an early-access option. Prices and dates change, so check the current booking page.

The original Bramante staircase

The older Bramante staircase can be seen from inside the Etruscan museum. Walking on it requires a special opening and is not part of every guided tour.

Skip the line

The phrase does not promise that you avoid the security check or any waiting time. Treat it as a description of how you enter.

Tours on a free Sunday

Free entry does not make a tour free.

On the last Sunday of the month the museums allow guided tours by reservation. Free entry says nothing about the price of the guide, so compare it the same way as on other days. Hours are shorter on those Sundays, from 09:00 to 14:00 with the last entry at 12:30. See the free Sunday page for the dates and the exceptions.

If you want to combine the museums with St Peter's Basilica on the same day, look at the pages of the sister guide on Vatican tours. Do not count on a passage from the Sistine Chapel to the basilica unless your booking states it. The tickets page lists the official prices for comparison.

A checklist for comparing listings

Five questions that settle most choices.

What does the entry include?

The museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day, or only a guided walk that needs a ticket from you.

Which language?

The language of the guide, and the date on which that language runs.

How big is the group?

The stated maximum, and whether the number applies to every date.

Where does it start?

The meeting point, which may be near the entrance on Viale Vaticano or elsewhere in Rome. See getting there.

Is there a cancellation option?

The terms of the provider decide, because the museum entry itself is not refundable.

Vatican Museums tours: frequently asked questions

Is a guided tour worth it?

It depends on how much background you want. A guide explains what you see and keeps you on a clear route. If you prefer your own pace, an entry ticket and the highlights route may be enough.

Does the tour price include the entry ticket?

Many listings include it, but not all. Read what is included in each listing, and compare the total with the €25 online ticket price.

Does a tour include St Peter's Basilica?

Only if the listing says so, and some offer it as an option. The basilica has its own entrance and its own rules.

Can I book a tour in German?

Language and days differ by provider, and a German tour is not offered every day. Check the language and the date in the listing before you pay.

How large is a small group?

It varies by provider. Look for the stated maximum number of people in the listing, and compare it between offers.
