Where the Vatican Museums entrance is

The entrance is on Viale Vaticano in Rome. There is no museum entry from St. Peter's Square, and the basilica has its own separate access. If you stand on the square, you are at the wrong place, so walk to the museum gate along the Vatican wall.

The easiest way to arrive is the metro. Line A runs from the Termini direction towards Battistini and stops at Ottaviano and at Cipro, and both are the stations used for the museum entrance. From there, you follow the wall to the gate.

At the gate

What to expect when you get there.

The line along the wall

Visitors queue along the Vatican wall on Viale Vaticano. A booking does not remove the checks: metal detectors apply to everyone. Wait times change from hour to hour and cannot be predicted, so allow a buffer on top of your slot.

Bags and cloakroom

Large bags are handed in at the cloakroom, which is free. Knives, scissors, metal tools and larger umbrellas must also be left there. Weapons are not allowed, even with a permit.

Dress and rules

Shoulders covered, no shorts above the knee, no hats. The dress code page explains what gets refused at the checks.

Know your slot

The museums open at 08:00 and the last regular entry is at 18:00. See the opening hours for the closed days, and the ticket page for prices.

If you want the basilica after the museums, it has its own entrance. The sister page on getting to St. Peter's Square covers the way there.

By car or taxi

Parking is possible but not guaranteed.

Street parking

Blue zones cost €1 an hour outside the limited traffic zone and €1.20 an hour inside it. The signs on the street decide the hours that apply. No museum car park is promised, so look for a space well before your slot.

Paper parking coupons

Sales of prepaid paper coupons ended on 30 June 2026. Coupons you already own stay valid until 31 December 2026.

Low-emission zone

Since 1 November 2025, the city's Fascia Verde zone bans older cars from Monday to Saturday: petrol, LPG and methane cars up to Euro 2, and diesel up to Euro 3. Some exceptions apply. This zone is not the same as the central traffic zone or a permit for the Vatican, so check your vehicle and address first.

For a longer day in the city, see the sister guide at Rome in one day. For the museums themselves, the highlights route and the best time to visit are good next pages.

Getting to the Vatican Museums: frequently asked questions

Which metro station is closest to the Vatican Museums?

Ottaviano and Cipro, both on metro line A towards Battistini. From either you follow the Vatican wall to the entrance on Viale Vaticano.

Is the museum entrance on St. Peter's Square?

No. The museums are entered from Viale Vaticano, and the basilica is reached separately from the square. Do not queue on the square for a museum ticket.

Which bus stops at the museums?

Bus 49 stops in front of the museums. Buses 32, 81 and 982 stop at Piazza del Risorgimento, and buses 492 and 990 at Via Leone IV and Via degli Scipioni.

How much is a single ride on public transport?

€1.50 for the BIT ticket in 2026, valid for 100 minutes from validation. On the metro it covers one ride, so a return trip needs a second ticket.

Can I drive to the Vatican Museums?

Parking is on the street in paid blue zones, at €1 an hour outside the limited traffic zone and €1.20 inside it. A guaranteed museum car park is not part of the visit, and the Fascia Verde zone restricts older cars Monday to Saturday.
