What early entry means at the Vatican Museums
The first regular entry is at 08:00, Monday to Saturday. That is the normal opening, not a head start. A ticket for an 08:00 slot with the label early entry is therefore a regular first-hour visit. A start before 08:00 exists only where an offer clearly says so and names the time.
One early option is an American breakfast buffet in the Cortile della Pigna, offered from April to October. It can be combined with guided tours and with an early-access option before opening time. Other combinations are offered without early access, at set times. Prices, dates and start times belong to each offer, so read the listing for your date.

Early options compared
What each one is, and what to check before you pay.
| Option | What it is | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Regular entry at 08:00 | The first regular slot, with the same opening as every visitor | Ticket price: โฌ20 at the ticket office, โฌ25 online with the โฌ5 reservation (2026) |
| Breakfast in the Pigna courtyard | An American buffet, April to October | Whether entry and a guide are included, the start time and the price |
| Early-access option | A start before the public, where the offer says so | The exact time, what is included and who the guide is |
| Guided tour in the first hour | A guide with an early slot | Language, group size and whether the entry ticket is in the price |
An early start does not change the rules inside. Dress code, security checks and the silence in the Sistine Chapel apply as on any other morning.

How to use an early start well
The first hour is worth planning.
Know the real start time
Compare the time in the listing with 08:00. If it says 08:00, it is the opening hour. If it names an earlier time, check the meeting point and the exact entry time in the booking.
Skip the line is not skip the checks
A fast-entry or pre-booked ticket does not remove the metal detectors. Online booking is no exemption from security. Plan a few minutes for it and bring only a small bag, because large bags go to the free cloakroom.
Do not expect an empty chapel
An earlier start can help, but no listing can promise a room without people. The Sistine Chapel stays a place for silence, with photos and films not allowed.
Match the day
Early options run on days the museums are open. Sundays are closed except for the free last Sunday, which opens at 09:00 instead. The opening hours page lists the closed days.
Know what the ticket covers
The entry ticket covers the museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, and tickets are not refundable. Read the cancellation terms of an early offer before you pay.
If you plan to add the basilica, give it its own time. The sister guide to St. Peter's Basilica explains how it works, separate from the museums.
Before you pay for an early offer
A short checklist that saves disappointment at the gate.
Entry ticket included or not
Some offers bundle the entry ticket, others add a guide or breakfast on top of a ticket you buy yourself. The plain ticket costs โฌ20 at the ticket office and โฌ25 online with the โฌ5 reservation, and โฌ10 or โฌ15 reduced (2026). Children under 7 enter free.
Official shop or reseller
Entry tickets are sold in the museums' own online shop at tickets.museivaticani.va, and similar-sounding sites can charge much more. A reseller can still be a fair choice when it adds a guide or a fixed time, but compare what the extra covers. Neither is illegal, and neither skips the checks.
Cancellation and changes
Museum tickets are valid only on the day issued and are not refundable. Reseller terms differ, so read them before you choose a slot you might have to move.
Reduced tickets need proof
Ages 7 to 18 and enrolled students up to 25 pay the reduced price, with proof of age or enrolment. A ticket booked at a reduced price without the right to it is cancelled, and a new full-price ticket is due.

Vatican Museums early entry: frequently asked questions
Can I enter the Vatican Museums before 08:00?
Only with an offer that names an earlier start. The regular opening is 08:00, so a slot at that time is not earlier than other visitors.
Is breakfast in the Pigna courtyard part of the ticket?
The breakfast is a separate offer, described from April to October. Check the listing for the price, the start time and whether entry or a guide is included.
Does early entry mean no security check?
No. Metal detectors apply to every visitor, including those with an online booking. Early offers change the time, not the checks.
Will the Sistine Chapel be empty with an early start?
No offer should be read as a promise of an empty chapel. An early start can help, but silence and the ban on photos apply as at any other time.
How much does early entry cost?
The price depends on the offer. The plain entry ticket is โฌ20 at the ticket office or โฌ25 online, including the โฌ5 reservation, in 2026. Breakfasts and guides are added by each listing, so compare what is included.
