How the free Sunday works
The Vatican Museums are free on the last Sunday of every month. It is the last Sunday, not the first. On that day the museums open from 09:00 to 14:00, with last entry at 12:30. The halls are cleared from 13:30, so the real time inside is shorter than it looks.
All other Sundays are closed days. The free Sunday is the one exception, and a few dates are left out: when the last Sunday falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December, there is no free day.

Planning the morning
Five hours go quickly. A few choices make them count.
Be at the gate early
Entry on the free Sunday is by queueing in person, at the entrance on Viale Vaticano. Waits vary and cannot be predicted. The one thing you control is your arrival time, so be there well before 09:00. The entrance and metro guide shows where the line starts.
Expect the usual checks
Metal detectors apply to every visitor. Large bags go to the free cloakroom, and knives, scissors and large umbrellas must be handed in. Read the dress code: covered shoulders, no shorts above the knee, no hats.
Pick your priorities
With last entry at 12:30 you cannot see everything. Choose two or three stops first, for example the Raphael Rooms, the Gallery of Maps and the Sistine Chapel. The highlights route shows a sensible order.
Keep the Sistine Chapel quiet
Photos and films are not allowed there, and silence applies. Phones stay away. On a busy morning this matters even more.
A guide is a separate booking
Guided visits can be reserved on free Sundays as well, but free entry says nothing about the price of the guide. Compare the options on the tours page.
Leave time before 13:30
The halls are cleared from 13:30. Start the last section by 13:00 so you are not moved along in the middle of a room.
If a free Sunday does not suit your trip
Other days give you more hours and more choice.
